FSC-2012 Price Memorial Park-Middletown

Cache Details:
Enter the park from Levels Road. You are looking for a green jar about 8 inches tall and 5 inches diameter. You MUST park in the parking lot locations, there is no parking on the grass or along the park roads.

The Park is open daily from 7 a.m. to sunset.

Description:
This cache is in a 100-acre park which features walking trails, nine pavilions of various sizes, an 8-acre catch and release fishing pond, a dog park, playgrounds and wide open fields for playing pick-up games of any kind.

The park is named in honor of lifelong resident and former Middletown Mayor Charlie Price, who passed away in 2010. Price dedicated numerous hours of service to the Volunteer Hose Company of Middletown, served as past president of the M.O.T. Little League, served as mayor for 12 years and was a veteran of World War II. Price is recognized and honored for his work in and around Middletown and for his love of the Town itself.

The dog park features 5-acre and 3-acre fenced-in areas for large dogs and small dogs respectively. There are also benches and water fountains for people and doggies in the dog park area.

For birders, the park is an excellent location to view grassland birds in Delaware. Harboring the most diverse assemblage of summer grassland species in the state, birders can easily find both Grasshopper Sparrows, Horned Larks, Red-Winged Blackbirds and Eastern Meadowlarks nesting in the spray irrigation fields. Beginning in 2010, the park hosted at least two pairs of nesting Savannah Sparrows and three pairs of Dickcissels. During migration, Bobolinks can be found in large numbers and there is a potential for nesting at this site. There are also small wet pockets in the spray fields that have produced birds such as Sora and Wilson’s Snipe. Winter birds have included large numbers of Savannah Sparrows and Horned Larks. Snow Buntings occasionally can be found in the park proper and there is a chance for a Lapland Longspur mixed in.

The best viewing locations: Dickcissels frequent the field on the left to the entrance road. Follow the entrance road to the first parking lot and walk back toward the entrance. More grassland birds can be found in almost any of the fields. To find the other species, the best option is to follow the road to the far side of the large pond and park in the large lot there. Walk to the post and rail fence and then along the fence in either direction. Early morning is the best for world class views of many of the species. - -Anthony T.Gonzon,Jr. DE Natural Heritage and Endangered Species Program, DE Division of Fish and Wildlife.
