Geocache Description:

Town of Clover Celebrates 125th Anniversary: At one time, Clover, South Carolina, was a little station on the Chester and Lenoir Narrow-Gauge Railroad that provided water to the trains passing through. But, by faith and fortitude, the Town’s population and economy grew. Clover was officially incorporated on December 24, 1887. Clover has continued to grow and prosper and now, 125 years after incorporation, is celebrating its Quasquicentennial Anniversary. The celebration will be held from September 2012 through March 2013. A variety of activities have been planned. Visit www.cloversc.org for anniversary event updates, and make sure to visit www.geocaching.com for other Clover History Caches in our History Series! To participate in the passport challenge, download the Clover History Series Geocaching Passport from www.cloversc.org. Upon locating all of the caches in the series and completing the challenges, bring your completed passport to the Town of Clover office and receive a limited edition commemorative (nontrackable) coin.

This cache is a small container with room for just a log. Bring your own writing utensil.

Most small towns, especially in the South, have a history that includes some not-so-pleasant times. This cache brings you to a location where one of those times was manifested.

Today, this area is a park with baseball fields, basketball courts and a playground. It is open to anyone. However, this is also the site of the Roosevelt School which was an all black school before it was integrated in 1970.

The school was originally built around 1922 and served 1-7th grades until 1934 when 8th grade was added.  In 1936, the school was renamed the McKnight School.  In 1947, the name was changed to Roosevelt, possibly in honor of the late President Franklin D. Roosevelt.  In 1955, a new school was built on the site.   The clover schools integrated in 1970 and Roosevelt High School merged with Clover High School, grades 9-12.  The building became Roosevelt Middle School for grades 5-8 for the entire school district.  It was torn down in the 1990’s and sold to the town in 1998. The city then turned it in to a park.

This cache is only available during daylight hours.
