Geocache Description:

This cache is one of the 12 caches in the Historical Maupin GeoTour operated by the Maupin Area Chamber of Commerce. This tour offers a Geocacher the opportunity to learn about the Central Oregon Historical Experience as it relates to the Maupin Area.

Historical description: On the old Historic Barlow Trail, pioneers and all their belongings endured long days as they crossed the Oregon High Desert. With the steep and rocky terrain, these travelers had to be made of the toughest leather. Many families questioned their decision to hit the Oregon Trail and some even thought it best to turn back as they came across seemingly unending difficult terrain. Today, locals call the Hwy 197’s 5 mile climb the Tygh Grade. This is the path to reach the summit of 2665 feet, the highest point from here to The Dalles, and because of its deep canyons, and it’s still without cell service. The high and wide range before you is the Tygh Ridge. From this vantage point, one is offered an excellent view of the land Native Americans occupied and shared with many French Fur Trappers, who operated a trading post. This valley was a perfect resting place for weary pioneers and gave them a place to restock before making the ascent towards Mt. Hood.

The Historic Maupin GeoTour Code word can be found in the lid of this cache.  A special thanks to 3rd Times a Charm for archiving his cache and graciously allowing the Maupin Chamber of Commerce to own his cache.
