Historical Description: Soon after the railroad arrived in Maupin, logging and sawmills became the primary industry in the area. Working in the mills gave families stability and wealth. Sadly, as with a lot of Maupin history, wildfire destroyed almost every mill in a period of 60 years, but Maupin resident’s had tenacity and the owners would rebuild, which would get everyone back to work until logging slowed in the 1970’s. With changing times, this affected the mills to the point where the workers had to be laid off, the mills were closed down, and people had to find new work. Maupin’s once booming economy and large residency changed as those people moved away. At the time of this writing, the only mill building still standing, the large green building overlooking the Deschutes River canyon once the previous home of the Oregon Log Homes, is being dismantled. In their day, the Oregon Log Homes built the current Visitor’s Center as a demo building and training operation. This land is scheduled to be rezoned and it is unknown what will become of the mill property and the history that follows.
This cache is located in the art form of logging just near the old mill. Be respectful of the tenants as this location is an active business and one wouldn’t want to be muggled by a bear.
