Geocache Description:

Historical Description: Along the river, there is very little private land available these days, and anything not privately owned is operated by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). The BLM is responsible for managing the use of the river, and making decisions for the long-term future of the river corridor. During the summer months, the BLM opens its visitor center and patrols the river. The BLM also houses a Work Center just a mile East of Maupin on Bakeoven Road. To the West, one can view the multiple layers of Maupin history. And to the South, there lies the Bakeoven Creek, which empties into the Deschutes River and has a great historical presence in Maupin. Located along the Bakeoven Creek banks, the Bakeoven Stage Station was built and operated a store and hotel for early travelers. Named for one such earlier traveler who was a German baker that brought his own tools, horses, and food supplies had a very unfortunate incident that led to his “Bakeoven” creation. One night, during the baker’s travels, all of his livestock were stolen, but he still had his food supplies and recognized the need to feed weary travelers, so he built an oven from the rough stones and clay along the creek and set up a bakery using his bakeoven. The bakeoven has been completely destroyed over the years, but the Bakeoven name remains.

The gravel parking area of the Bakeoven Work Center is the location for this cache.
