Geocache Description:

This cache is one of the 12 caches in the Historical Maupin GeoTour operated by the Maupin Area Chamber of Commerce. This tour offers a Geocacher the opportunity to learn about the Central Oregon Historical Experience as it relates to the Maupin Area.

Historic Description: Be sure to bring a fully stocked picnic basket to this cache’s hiding spot. When Maupin was established in 1910, no one could have known that the entire city’s downtown buildings would need to be rebuilt just a short 11 years later. Imagine relocating to the Oregon desert to make a new way of life, investing all of your savings and earnings into a small business only to have one false move bring it all to ashes. It was 10am on a September Saturday morning in 1921 when a kerosene heater caused the city’s worst and most destructive fire.  People know it as “the fire of 1921,” and its been memorialized by a hand-painted mural in the center of Maupin’s Main Street. The mural depicts what Maupin, in the olden days, would have looked like to passers-by. This small town, created as a crossing for the Deschutes and station for the building of the new railroad, was a thriving metropolis with its own Post Office, multiple Grocery Stores, Bank, Drug Store and Doctor’s Office, Barber Shop, Candy Shop, Pool Hall, and Cafes.

With nearly the entire town burning to the ground, one can understand how the need for a voluntary fire department was a must. To this day, the entire area is kept free of fires and destruction by a loyal and trusted group of volunteers who take it very seriously when even small fires get started. The city has an imposed fire-ban during the summer season, and although residents may seem slightly paranoid to tourists who’d like to have an open fire or charcoal BBQ, they have good reason in their history.

This little picnic spot is locally known as the “Greenway,” and its ownership is currently in transition as the Kaiser Family of Maupin is requesting this land remain in the city’s hands as forever a park area. Take a break in your day and lunch in the Greenway.
