Geocache Description:

This cache is one of the 12 caches in the Historical Maupin GeoTour operated by the Maupin Area Chamber of Commerce. This tour offers a Geocacher the opportunity to learn about the Central Oregon Historical Experience as it relates to the Maupin Area.

Historical Description: The “Train Race” is depicted on one of the four hand-painted murals located in downtown Maupin. As tumultuous as its past, the very process of designing this mural was challenging. The simplified version of the Train Race begins with two companies deciding to lay tracks on both sides of the Deschutes River. As you can imagine, this race led to fighting and death. Completing the tracks along the most difficult terrain known to man was historic, in and of itself, and then there is the “railroad war” that ensued during the construction that makes this story epic.

It was eventually decided that one set of tracks would be maintained and the other removed. Most of what is now the Deschutes Access Road was the old Railroad bed that runs through Maupin, and both up and down river.

Across the street from this story wall is the Maupin Post Office. The original town site was named Maupin Ferry, however when the Post Office submitted this name, the authorities thought it was too long so they truncated it to Maupin and the rest is history.
