Entre 1937 y 1938, en plena Guerra Civil española, se excavó un túnel de 200 metros bajo la roca del castillo de Denia para servir de refugio a la población civil cuando se producían bombardeos de la aviación Nacional. En realidad se diseñaron dos galerías, pero sólo se construyó una, la que hoy une la calle La Mar con Ronda de Muralles. La segunda que se planificó nunca llegó a concluirse debido al fin de la guerra: transcurría desde el puerto hasta la calle Trinitat . La última reforma se realizó en 2009 con el propósito de convertirse en un museo histórico que nunca ha visto la luz.
El túnel está perforado sobre roca caliza, la cual queda directamente a la vista en su interior.
Una vez dentro , con un poco de imaginación puedes sentir los miedos y angustias que debieron pasar hombres , mujeres y niños escondidos en las entrañas de la montaña. Cuando bramaban las sirenas que anunciaban los terribles bombardeos, los vecinos corrían a refugiarse bajo aquel túnel, que disponía de bancos. La población, muchas veces hambrienta, miraba los plátanos que estaban allí madurándose y que no podían tocar. Dénia se convirtió, por la importancia de su puerto y por sus fábricas de munición -antiguas factorías de juguetes-, en un objetivo de "la pava", la temida aviación italiana , aliada del General Franco. Esta situación obligó a construir refugios antiaéreos, como el del túnel del Castillo, excavado en 1937 y donde según rememora Vicent Balaguer ( investigador de la historia de Dénia) los niños refugiados traidos desde Madrid (que hablaban castellano) se entendían perfectamente en la crueldad de la situación con los chavales locales de habla valenciana. Dénia también sufriría los bombardeos del crucero Canarias, apostado a la bocana del puerto. Según el arqueólogo Josep Ahuir murieron en la ciudad 38 personas por las bombas. El túnel tiene dos entradas y se puede atravesar por completo. Una desde el centro histórico de Denia y otra desde la muralla norte del castillo .
El cache se encuentra a unos 25 metros de esta segunda entrada.
Es un pequeño bote con librillo de registro . Lleva bolígrafo para anotar tu visita.

between 1937 and 1938, in the middle of the Spanish Civil War , a tunnel 200 meters long was dug below the Denia Castle rock, to provide shelter to civilians during air bombings by the National air force. Two galleries were actually designed,but only one was built, that now joins Calle La Mar with calle Muralles . The second one planned was never completed due to the end of the war. It was supposed to pass from the port to the calle Trinitat. The last reform was carried out in 2009 with the aim of becoming a historical museum that has never seen the light.
The limestone where the tunnel is drilled in is directly visible from inside.
When you walk through it, with a little of imagination, it is easy to feel the fear and anxiety that men, women and children ought to suffer while hidden in the heart of this huge rock . When the sirens blared announcing the terrible bombings, residents ran looking for cover under the tunnel, which had benches inside . The population, often hungry, looked at the hanging bananas placed there to get matured , but it was forbidden to touch them. The importance of the Denia port ,because of its ammunition factories ( old toys factories), made it a target of “la pava" , the frightening Italian air force allied with General Franco. This situation forced to build bomb shelters , like this tunnel under the castle , excavated in 1937 and where, according to Vicent Balaguer (researcher of the history of Dénia), refugees children brought from Madrid, who spoke Castillian , and local children who only spoke Valencian language, perfectly understood each other under the cruelty of the situation . Denia also suffer bombing from the warship “Canarias”, located at the harbour entrance . According to archaeologist Josep Ahuir 38 people were killed by bombs in the city.
The tunnel has two entrances, and can be walked through completely .One entrance is in the historic downtown of Denia and the other one in the north wall of the castle.
The cache is located about 25 meters away from this second entrance.
