In 1905, formalized library service begins in Albany with a $10,000 grant from Andrew Carnegie.  The Carnegie Library opened with a collection of 1,500 books which were furnished by the Albany Library Association.  The Northwest Branch opened in 1966, using bond funds and matching funds from the State Department of Education Library Services division.  In 1983, the library systems began using an automated cataloging and operating system.  The software was developed locally and later sold to other libraries throughout the country.  In 1985, Central Library opens in a facility that formerly housed Rhodes Furniture Company.  Carnegie Library closes, and the facility the building was, reopened as the headquarters of the Albany Area Arts Council in 1992. In 1988, the Northwest Branch underwent renovation with $120,000 in funding from the Library Services and Construction Act, and $130,000 in local funds.  In 2009, the Northwest Branch relocates to an expanded facility that formerly housed Rhodes Furniture Company.  In 2010, the library reduces operating hours due to decrease in funding, and in 2011, eBooks become available through the library.  All of the library locations utilize volunteers, and also take material or monetary donations at any of the branches!  Please enjoy the hide, and remember to support your local, community library system..a great place to READ! **Disclaimer** Permission for the placement of this hide was given by Director of Library Systems, Ashley Moore (deceased).
