Geocache Description:

A Church Micro at St Mary's church, Puncknowle.

The tower is of three storeys with a pyramidal roof and has three bells. The original structure dates from the 12th century, but there was some reconstruction in the 17th century. In the south wall of the tower is a small arch leading to a stairway, now blocked, which led up to the first floor of the tower and gave access to the gallery which was formerly on the west wall of the nave but was removed during the reconstruction of 1891.

The font in the south-west corner of the nave is 12th century. It is a semi-cylindrical bowl with cable decorations and stands on what appears to be another font. (Thought to be the font from St Giles, West Bexington).

The westernmost window in the south wall is believed to be 14th century. The doorway in the south wall is probably 18th century and was used to give easy access to the manor house behind. Above the doorway is a hatchment of the Stuart Arms on a wood panel and dated 1673. A little further along the wall is a 17th century helmet - the spurs and gauntlets were stolen in 1975.

The south aisle, or Bexington Chapel was built or rebuilt around 1660. It was originally built for the people of Bexington following the destruction of their village and their church of St Giles by the French in the mid 15th century.

The chancel arch is 12th century. The wall paintings over the arch are believed to be from the second half of the 14th century. The chancel is 19th century.

The north aisle was added in 1891 as was the pulpit.
