Horseshoe Island near Pirates Cove Marina was formed by a land cut in the 1800's. This 'shortcut' allowed canal traffic to avoid going around the "Big Bend" of the Oneida River, hence it's referred to as the Big Bend cut. Oneida River was used in the past as a way to transport goods, runaway slaves, and bootleg whiskey... all good and respectable things for any pirate to be rightfully proud!
