Geocache Description:

Hoya saxa! Welcome to Georgetown.

Healy Hall, Georgetown University

The historic building with the clocktower on top is Healy Hall, designed by Paul Johannes Pelz and John Smithmeyer and built in 1879.

Healy Hall is named for Father Patrick Francis Healy, the 29th President and “second founder” of Georgetown University. Born into slavery in Macon, Georgia, Fr. Healy is recognized as the first American of African ancestry to become a Jesuit (1852), the first to earn a PhD (1865), and the first to become president of a predominantly white college (1874, when Georgetown was the largest Catholic college in the United States).

Patrick’s elder brother, James Augustine Healy, was the first American of African ancestry to become a Catholic priest (1854) and bishop (1875, of Portland, Maine).

Healy Hall is on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places and is a U.S. National Historic Landmark. Pelz and Smithmeyer also designed the Library of Congress’ iconic Jefferson Building.

This cache is not located inside the gates, but it is hidden in a very busy location full of inquisitive young muggles, so please be as stealthy as you can and please replace as found! BYOP.
