You’re standing at Howard Park, named in honor of Captain Arthur H. Howard (1876-1924). Captain Howard served for years as the President of the Wilmette Board of Education until his death in November, 1924.
Howard had personally overseen development and construction of the Ridge School on the parcel of land found on the eastern half of the Park. Ridge School opened its doors for the first time in September 1924, just two months before Captain Howard passed unexpectedly. The Board resolved immediately to rename the School in his honor.
The School closed in 1979 and was demolished a few years later. The School’s circle drive still sits on eastern edge of the park, and School’s distinctive copper cupola has been maintained and stands as a monument nearby. After Howard School’s closure, the Village merged the school grounds (the lower half of the park) with the recreational fields located on the upper half, formerly known as the Village Green, and leased the entire area of land to the Park District. You are now standing at the ridge that divides the lower half from the upper half.
Since that time, the entire parcel has been known as Howard Park, used for lacrosse, softball, and as the home of the Wilmette Eagles Football program.
