Geocache Description:

A small cache at another interesting mining area in Chiltern Mt Pilot National Park

Puddling was a method (invented in Australia) used during the Gold Rushes to break up clay soil to separate out the gold. A horse was used to drag a weight round a circular pit filled with material brought up from deep lead mines close by.

Wallaces Lead is the site of more puddling pits than anywhere else in Victoria - the cache is located in the middle of one and close to another. Puddling pits were always located next to shallow dams in gully bottoms so the water could be used to soften the soil.

More information on Wallaces Lead puddling here (visit link) . This area must have been a hive of industry in the 1850s!

The cache is a small container with logbook, pencil, a few coins and a geocoin.

Watch for snakes, and of course no dogs!
