Geocache Description:

Over the past couple of years, I've done a series of geocaches that were dedicated to one of my favorite rock bands, the Grateful Dead (or should I say "dead-icated"?). But the Dead aren't strictly the only group that I listen to with any regularity. I've been a fan of the Beach Boys since the early '60's. So I thought, why not a series for that group as well (especially since they are celebrating their 50th anniversary this year). Now they played Portland quite a few times, but only in a couple of places (and those sites already have Grateful Dead caches). So this series won't be for where they played, but for some of the songs that they wrote and sang, and the messages the songs contain.

The Beach Boys were most popular for their sun, surf, car songs (with an occassional ballad tossed in), and for the Four Freshman-inspired harmonies that was their trademark vocal signature. They were at one time the most popular rock'n'roll group in America, knocking the Beatles off the top of the charts with their first #1 hit record, "I Get Around". More recently, they have just finished a 70 city world tour celebrating their 50th anniversary as a band. The core group was comprised of three brothers, a cousin, and a high school classmate. Though they've had high times and low times over the years, the sound they produce is still instantly recognizable when a song comes on the radio.

The next song I'm writing about in my Beach Boys series is an interesting song, from both a musical and personal standpoint. Musicaly, it was one that was not included on any of the LPs, but released as a 45rpm single (think vinly CD with at BIG hole in the middle). It was the last recording they made before starting work on the iconic "Pet Sounds" LP. The song is notable for innovative use of two dramatic periods of near-silence lasting several seconds each. As radio stations preferred to avoid dead air time, the song was poorly received by those stations, which may account for its relatively low chart rating among their other singles of the period, such as "California Girls" and "Barbara Ann". If you click on the related web page link, you will have a chance to see the song performed by a group called the Fendertones. It's very well done, and captures the spirit of the song perfectly.(It also features a song that will be a future Beach Boys cache..... )

"We met when she was younger
And I had no eyes for her.
A few years went by and I saw her,
Now I'm gonna try for her."

(insert 8 beat count here which the radio stations hated)

"She's not the little girl I once knew
She's not the little girl I once
She's not the little girl I once
She's not the little girl I once knew."

From a personal standpoint, this was the first song I ever saw Brian Wilson sing live in concert. When Brian started touring again, as a solo act, in 1999, his first tour took him to the Pacific NW. There was only one city that he played two shows in, and it was Portland, at the Aladdin Theater on SE Milwaukie. I was fortunate to score 2nd row center tickets, only 25 feet from him. This was the first song he sang that night, and it was a memorable concert (sitting that close to one of the legends of rock'n'roll). I especially remember the person who was sitting behind me. Since the seats were so close together, everytime she stood up to cheer and scream (like we all were doing), she hit the back of my head. At the intermission, I turned to mention something to her, and it was....Brian Wilson's wife. So what did I say?? "Welcome to Portland", what else!
