Geocache Description:

"Keawa‘ula, a cave"

We found this place on accident. As we were driving down from the satalite tracking area, we saw some ruins, or rock walls. So when we got down, we went and took a look!

We had no idea about this place!

So we placed a cache, then came home and I started to google...

Keawa‘ula is a cave, land division, and beach park. It is believed that newly dead spirits would come here. If theiraumakua (their personal god) thought they were ready they would go into the new world. If they were not, they would become homeless sprits walking among the earth. They called this place Kaho‘iho‘ina Wākea. Hawaiians believe this because they say they hear footsteps and see the kukui lamps that night marchers would use. Keawa‘ula is now known as Yokohama Bay. It was changed to Yokohama because of all the Japanese fishermen that fished there they gave it the nickname Yokohama after the famous fishing village in Japan. Keawa‘ula got the name from all the squid that use to come into the area. When the squid would come into the ocean, from the shore it would appear as a reddish brown color. Archeologists found Keawa’ula cave in 1859. They think that it was originally called Poha cave but when it was founded in 1859 they gave it the name Keawa‘ula. The short slide up above is Yokohama Bay or Keawa‘ula now. At the end is Ka'ena Point where they said is the cave underneath the ocean that leads the spirits to a new world.

It is believed that there was once a shark man who would go into the cave as a shark and come out as a man. This cave that the man went into had many different tunnels that lead all over the place. The cave even had a tunnel that lead into an underwater cave. When the army heard about this tunnel that lead into an underwater cave they knew that they had to close it. They needed to close that tunnel because if someone was to decide that they wanted to attack us, they could use that cave tunnel to ambush us. They did not know which tunnel lead underwater, so they decided to bomb the whole thing.

You can drive right to it if you have a 4x4 (EDIT 3.10.15 - read a log saying road is blocked now, so not sure if you can still drive to it in 4x4), two different entrances. Oner near the first telephone pole after the gate house up to the top, the other way to drive to it is from the parking at the very end of the paved road. Or you can park on the road next to the beach and is then a short hike(EDIT 3.10.15 - numerous logs now indicated it is overgrown, dress for it,maybe not a rubber slipah cache! was good when we went due to a brush fire not too long prior)).
