The small cache is placed on the property of the mine, but the location is accessible via a public road and not within any secure or restricted area of the mine.
There is parking available at the provided coordinates next to the road as well as opposite the road. A gate manned by security is within view, but far enough so they shouldn't be a problem. If someone asks, the following can be used as a cover: Explain to them that you are a photographer of the beautiful view or you are studying the insects between the rocks (these are the two options I use most). A rocky outcrop will provide cover from the security when GZ is reached.
The cache is placed close to an archived cache, which is where I got most of the information. The name of the cache "Our hope" is translated from isiZulu name, Ithembalethu, which is the name of the shaft nearby.
Driefontein is part of the Gold Fields group. Geologically it is located in the West Wits Line Goldfields of the Witwatersrand Basin, it comprises seven producing shaft systems that mine different contributions from pillars and open ground. Three gold plants process the ore.
Three primary reefs are exploited, the Ventersdorp Contact Reef (VCR) located at the top of the Central Rand Group, the Carbon Leader Reef (CL) near the base and the Middelvlei Reef (MR), which stratigraphically occurs some 50 meters to 75 meters above the CL.
The mine is a large, well-established deep to ultra-deep level gold mine to 50 level (the lowest working level) some 3,300 meters below surface.
The cache is a small, lock'nlock container, capable of holding small trackable items.
