You will be searching for an 11 cm magnetic tube, with a 2.5 cm diameter,on this beautiful former railroad bridge. Please return the container to exactly where you found it, even if you think your coordinates are better than mine. Make it as inconspicuous as possible. Thank you. It’s a half mile hike (one mile round trip) to the bridge along a sometimes muddy logging road. (The logger is quite friendly; in fact, he’ll talk your ear off.) Enjoy the scenery. In the winter, it would make a nice cross country ski or snow shoe trek. Please park at the designated coordinates. You need to be on the bridge itself to find the geocache container. It's not under the bridge. The road you will walk along and the bridge were once part of a spur line of the Delaware and Hudson railroad back in the early 1950’s. It started in Cobleskill and traveled north and west stopping at four creameries along the way to pick up local milk from dairy farms. Cherry Valley was the end of the line. When the thruway (I-90) was built, it became more convenient and profitable for the milk to travel by truck and the last use of the track by train was back in 1956. I don’t know when the tracks were removed. The track bed extends from here almost to Sharon Springs, about 10 miles, and is marked as a snowmobile trail.
You're on your own if you choose to drive up the road from Rt 166 directly to the bridge. I know people who have done it, but I don't know how the police would treat you if they saw you. Your choice! You're also on your own if you choose to park on Rt 20 underneath the bridge and climb up the embankment to the top. I don't believe it is legal to park and leave your car on the side of the road. Your choice again!
