Kawabata Yasunari 川端康成, known as Japan's first Nobel Literature Prize recipient, was born here in 1899.
At the coordinates, you will see a small monument to remember one of the greatest novelists in Japan, Kawabata Yasunari. He wrote famous short stories including "Izu-no-odoriko" 伊豆の踊り子 and "Yukiguni" 雪国 which received international reputations. In 1968 he was given Nobel Literature Prize for the first time in Japan in that field. He was born on June 14, 1899. His birth place was around south side of the Japanese restaurant 料亭 "Ai-oi-rou" 相生楼 just at the listed coordinates. He died in 1972 when he was 72 years old.
