1898 Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

Cache Butts County: This cache has been archived because the courthouse is STILL being restored and it is anticipated that the landscaping will be next. No telling how long that will take. A new cache will be placed here once the dust dies down! Stay tuned.

Welcome to the historic 1898 courthouse of Butts County, GA. The courthouse was finished in the fall of 1898 with a total cost of $25, 080.00 It was designed by the Atlanta architectural firm of Bruce and Morgan and was built by J. H. McKenzie and Sons. The design features a combination of Queen Anne and classical Revival Styles.

If the courthouse is open and court is not in session we encourage you to take a look at the courtroom upstairs. You will find Tiffany inspired windows as well as a stained glass window full of life and colors behind the Judge's bench, decorative iron columns, and decorative detailed woodwork and plaster among the Judge's bench.

If you look around outside the courthouse you will see grand magnolia trees and large porches. A monument of a civil war soldier leaning against his musket who has been standing since 1911. There are pictures around the courthouse from different time periods of people gathered at the courthouse for festivals and revivals. The courthouse and the square are still used for family style festivals today. Thanks to J. Dozier for the container!
