Day of the Dead, or Dia de los Muertos, is a ritual celebration that dates back millennia to the earliest indigenous cultures of Mexico. Traditionally, Dia de los Muertos is practiced to honor deceased relatives. Friends and family members travel to burial sites where they place offerings of food and candies and decorate loved ones’ graves with flowers.
Celebrations begin on November 1(All Saints Day) and continue through November 2(All Souls Day).
The skull or calavera is an iconic symbol of the holiday and can be seen in everything from decorative masks, painted artwork and even food.
