How Geocaching Works

Geocache Description:

The premise of this series is to give the casual cacher a chance to a FTF. They will be easy to find and fun for the whole family. Caches will be placed along a scenic paved route making for a nice family activity. I ask that if you are the FTF one of the cahes in this series that you ARE NOT the FTF in any other. I know a lot of you thrive on getting that FTF and I want so give some less experienced cachers a chance for a family outing and a possible FTF. Please respect this rule.

Congratulations to the following
Lincolns Navigator for FTF "FTF Mario Mario"

Apryo & bafl01 for Co-FTF "FTF the Surface of the Moon"
JCanyoneer for FTF "FTF Cache"

The second part of this is to learn something new.  Each Cache will provide information for the first time something was done or discovered, or invented or something along those lines.   Our first FIRST is the first cache ever planted that started this whole wonderful thing we call Geocaching.  Before the website even existed the first cache was planted by Dave Ulmer on May 3rd, 2000 in Beaver Creak Oregon.  At the time he was just trying to check on a recent sattelite upgrade and he wanted to test their accuracy.  He posted the coordinates on an website designed for GPS enthusiasts.  This caught the attention of MIke Teague who was the very first FTF.  Shortly after he organized a mailing list that gathered coordinates of other caches making a beta version of what we have today.  Teague's work was noticed by Jeremy Irish who fell in love with the concept and decicded to write the website that we are currently utilizing.   Thanks to the serendipitous birth of Geocaching.com which brings many people great joy.  The ability to bring people together, out enjoying nature and doing activities that benefit the community is no short task.  For more information on the history of Geocaching.com you should find the "Complete Idiot's Guide to Geocaching, 2nd ed.".
