Geocache Description:

Look up the bypass NE, about 1000 ft from GZ and see the smoke stack of what use to be "Diamond Crystal Salt" a huge producer of table salt for restaurants and homes all over the nation! Legend has it that there is still and underground city here :) Cache is only accessible thru the side streets behind B & K Rootbeer. PLEASE DO NOT ATTEMPT IT FROM THE MANCHESTER BYPASS AND NO NIGHT CACHING! You may need an extractor to get the log out. Bring a writing stick and please no swag or TBs :)

Diamond Crystal Salt merged with Cargill Salt in 1997 and they are now mostly mining salt here water softeners 24/7.
I wanted to put the cache closer for a better view of the plant, but active railroads are nearby :( So take a walk up the sidewalk or view it when driving over the bypass and see the fake giant salt container :)

This area was called "Industrial South Akron" and this pic was taken in 1977. The view is from Manchester Road, showing (left) Firestone Plant #1; (center) Diamond Crystal Salt Works (now Cargill Salt); (center right) B.F. Goodrich Aerospace; and (right) Firestone Plant #2.

If you look really close, you can even see the fake giant salt container, beside the right side of the smoke stack, on top of the building. It's still there today and you can see it from Manchester Rd but it's now on the side of the building.

1997-Present
Diamond Crystal® brand salt is now part of the Cargill family of products and is the nation's largest marketer of salt.

Congrats to Blue Goose for the FTF!
