In 1853 Sam Sabine, one of the earliest settlers of Kaufman County, invented a large cutting and harvesting machine he called the "Sabine" which helped usher in an era of agricultural riches for north Texas. He modified the machine more than 10 times, allowing the harvest of wheat, corn, peas, and lentils. At one time he even tried to adapt it as a quicker way of caching barnyard chickens. The area's only other agricultural manufacturer in north Texas in the late 1800's was run by Carl Combs, a German immigrant, who designed and manufactured planting equipment. Upon the sudden death of Sam Sabine in 1889, Mr. Combs bought his company and renamed the "Sabine" and changed it to its present day name, the "Combine." Now you know the rest of the story and would be that much smarter if any part of this fictional account was true - which, of course, it is not!
