You seek a smal camo'd magnetic container. There is a log for you to sign and a few trinkets for trade, if you are so inclined. The cache is hidden at the site of one of those stories that reminds us that fate is a cruel trickster.....
The following was adapted from an article in The Pilot newspaper for Southern Pines NC published on May 30, 1957:
They don't really know to this day how Johnny Champion escaped from North Carolina Central Prison. It is believed he either managed to scale the fence or caught a ride out in a garbage truck. He had been incarcerated for less than a year, at the time, but he was no stranger to jail. In fact, he was serving a fifteen to twenty year sentence for being a habitual felon. He was very fond of stealing cars in Fayetteville.
The manhunt was only a few hours old when it was cancelled. At 2:40 AM that same night, military police found his body sprawled on the road just outside the southern entrance to Fort Bragg.
He had been killed in a hit-and-run accident.
It is believed that Champion had tried to hitch a ride, maybe attempted to stop a car and had been struck down. His body was found 149 feet from the point of impact. Marks on the road indicated the car had applied the brakes and skidded 56 feet before striking him. Both his arms were broken, as well as extensive other injuries.
The driver and the car that killed Champion were never found.
