Geocache Description:

A very easy P&G at the start of the popular West Harbour Cycleway/Walkway. You'll find a Mega Menagerie code animal inside the lid of the cache, to help you find Mega Menagerie Final.

The other caches in the Mega Menagerie zoo are currently: In the Woods II; Not So Mega; Us04; Hinemoana; Tunfisk; Tharon; Guwapo; iRufus; DebsNZ III

The foreshore road is used by cyclists, walkers and children. Please drive slowly and carefully.

If you enjoy observing threatened species, come and watch Dunedin’s cyclists frolicking in a protected environment. You are sure to spot the exotic tight-lycra roadie; the preschooler on a push-along; and maybe even a group of old fogies cycling for the first time since their school days.

Then jump on your own bike and enjoy the safe and cruisy 4.6 km ride to St Leonards! Dogs are welcome too, but must be kept on the leash.

This scenic seaside shared path reached Ravensbourne (1.2 km, $220,000) in 2006, Maia (1.3 km, $350,000) in 2008 and St Leonards (2.1 km, $1,000,000) in September 2012. The latest extension includes the fun of going straight across two small bays on the railway embankment.

Completing the remaining 5-and-a-bit kilometres from St Leonards to Port Chalmers is a priority for the DCC Strategic Cycle Network and the 2012-2015 Regional Land Transport Programme as well as for Dunedin cycling groups. The Regional Transport Committee is asking the New Zealand Transport Authority for the $5.6 million needed to complete the path by 2015.

Safety is particularly important on this stretch of State Highway 88 as the road is windy and narrow with a large number of lorries travelling at high speed to and from Port Otago. A separate pathway for vulnerable road users such as cyclists and pedestrians will allow people to choose to commute by bike for local trips, lessening dependence on non-renewable fuels.

And ... The remaining 5 km from St Leonards to Port Chalmers was finally opened 26 August 2023!

And regarding safety, look out for a well-adjusted cycle helmet: New Zealand Road Code

Helmet position - your three-step-mission

Perform the three-step helmet position test below and adjust if necessary.
The following three steps can be carried out to check the position of the helmet.

1. Check that your ears sit in the middle of the V shape of the straps.
2. Make sure that the front of the helmet sits two fingers width above your eyebrows.
3. Check that when the chin strap is done up, that just one finger can fit between your chin and the strap.

This hide is in an area of trees planted to celebrate newborns or to commemorate loved ones lost: ODT 1 Sept 2012 Dismay at Theft ; ODT 11 May 2009 Planting at Brackens Lookout.

There is plenty of room in the log book to put in the date that you sign it. Because the date can be important for some challenges, logs without a correct date may be subject to deletion. I will use my common sense and discretion as we all make genuine mistakes at times.
