Geocache Description:

This is an easy multi cache in the beautiful village of Gharghur. Scenic views included!

The chapel “Santa Maria taz-Zellieqa” is overlooking a beautiful valley at the outskirts of Gharghur, a quiet rural village in Malta.
Santa Maria taz-Zellieqa
The chapel was built in 1560. A legend says that it was built by a young woman after she had a vision of Holy Mary after which she was healed of her sickness. The chapel was then rebuilt in its present form in 1650. The altar piece representing the Assumption is the work of Rocco Buhagjar, a renowned Maltese creator of devotional art, and was painted in 1759. On the lateral sides are paintings of Emvin Cremona and Filippo Dingli, the brother of the chapel’s architect, Tommaso Dingli. The chapel is only open on Saturdays for visits.

Today the chapel is very popular for weddings thanks to its beauty and the scenic surroundings. Nearly every summer weekend one can see bride, groom, wedding guests and vintage limousines around the chapel.

If you stand in front of the chapel looking out over the valley to the hill opposite, you will see a small road. This leads to a nice walk around the hill to marvellous view points and also to other caches which are worth visiting.

The cache is a micro containing only the log. Please bring your own pencil. To find the cache, look at the two commemorative plaques on the left and right of the entrance door of the chapel.
Find the words “GIET MIBNIJA FIS-SENA ABCD A.D.” and “LI KITEB (EFGH)” with ABCD and EFGH being 4 digit numbers.
