Geocache Description:

"Fifteen men on the dead man's chest—
…Yo-ho-ho, and a bottle of rum!
Drink and the devil had done for the rest—
…Yo-ho-ho, and a bottle of rum!"
(Robert Louis Stevenson, Treasure Island)

Legend goes that pirate Edward Teach (the notorious Blackbeard) marooned a number of his crew on Dead Man's Chest, a tiny island in the Caribbean Sea. An uninhabited, large rock outcropping with no fresh water or trees, the island resembled a coffin in shape and was a common rendezvous for buccaneers and smugglers. The Pirate Code of Blackbeard stated that each marooned pirate should be given a cutlass and a bottle of rum, and the men were put ashore with no other supplies. The exact number of men and how many days they spent ashore have been lost in time, but by the end of the month many were dead.

Now if you dare to come to this island on which pirates have tread, do keep a careful look-out! You might find these scalawags and pirates still are resting, marooned somewhere on this shore. Of course, if you do cross paths with any of them, please leave them be. It's said they are the guardians of a secret scroll where pirates of the past have scrawled their names. Those who find the scroll are permitted to leave their mark, but leave no other trace of your visit. It's not just Potomac Pirates who visit this land.

Best o' luck and don't be joining permanently those who've been marooned!
