Larnaca View (GCG0RE) set by Loris is the cache which in 2005 started us off on our journey through the wonderful world of geocaching. In those days there were only 34 caches on the whole of Cyprus, but within three weeks we had found 10 of them and were well and truly hooked.
As Larnaca View was recently archived, we decided to set a new cache in this superb location which holds a special place in our geocaching memories.
The cache is situated on the way up to (or down from) Stavrovouni Monastery, the highest landmark in the Larnaca area.
Perched on a rocky peak, Stavrovouni means Mountain of the Cross. According to tradition it was founded in the 4th century by the mother of Constantine the Great, Saint Eleni, who left a fragment of the Holy Cross at the monastery. The brotherhood is extremely devout, keeping very strict vows. There is an impressive ceremony and celebrations on September 14th, the day of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.
Women are not allowed to visit Stavrovouni Monastery, but there is a chapel outside the monastery which is open to all. Men may visit the monastery, but must be decently dressed. The use of cameras or video cameras is prohibited.
The opening hours for the monastery are September – March: 07:00 – 11:00, 14:00 – 17:00
April – August: 08:00 – 12:00, 15:00 – 18:00
The cache is not in exactly the same place as the original Larnaca View, but is nearby. Access to Stavrovouni is possible by several different routes, but we suggest the tarmac road which starts at the given waypoint and winds its way up the mountain. To approach the cache, you will need to drive or walk a short distance along a clear track. There is no need to leave the track in order to locate and retrieve the cache.
