Geocache Description:

Recreation at Sun Canyon Ranch

Have you ever see something in your travels that made you wonder? This happens to me a lot when taking the road less traveled, in search of new discoveries, this happened while setting up the first Magpies event, visiting some of the sites that Thurman has to offer. One of the locations used to be part of the Sun Canyon Ranch. If you look, there is a little marker that denotes a stop along an historical tour of Thurman

Sun Canyon Ranch has it roots reaching back to 1937 when the original ranch, Boulder Greens Guest Ranch was built on the old Silas Tucker farm. After a few years, one partner bought out the other and renamed it Sun Canyon Ranch.

It its heyday, it could accommodate up to 200 guests. Activities included horse rides, swimming, a variety of sports activities, square dancing, and other activities associated with ranch life. The main lodge had a large lounge, a dining room, a kitchen, gift shop and office. The recreation lodge was where the swimming pool was located as well as a snack bar and the spot that the dancing would take place.

Many guests would come from NYC and later, after it was sold in 1962; Hollywood. The ranch saw its end after a fire claimed the main lodge and then, four days later, another fire claimed the recreation hall.

There were a couple of large lodges named Luxury Lodge and Robin Lodge as well as a bunch of smaller cabins.

This cache is part of the Sun Canyon Dude Ranch series. Since the ranch was closed in the mid-60’s, we can only piece together activities from old brochures and accounts from people that used to work at the ranch or lived in the area. We envision this cache being one of the destinations of the guests that stayed at the ranch.

Access is gained via a snowmobile trail that borders private property. Please respect the various owner’s property and stay on the trail.
