Geocache Description:

A moderate hike on the new Long Branch Trail, owned and maintained by Lula Lake Land Trust and part of the Cloudland Canyon Connector Trail System. This cache is available every day; no locked gate.

One of the geocaches needed for the RiverRocks GeoTrail Challenge (GC3W6WC)!

The Lula Lake Land Trust has worked for years to protect a beautiful and diverse area in extreme Northwest Georgia, along the northern end of Lookout Mountain. In recent years, they have worked with SORBA and other groups to establish a trail from the heart of their landholding (Lula Lake, Lula Falls) to nearby Cloudland Canyon State Park. The Long Branch trail, which begins at the Nickajack Trailhead off Nickajack Road, is a major section of that trail. It is open by day to hikers, mountain bikers, horseback riders -- and geocachers!

Ample parking, compost toilets, covered picnic table and more are available at the Nickajack trailhead (see waypoint.) Park there and set out to find this (and other!) caches along this excellent gently rolling trail, which is well-described here:

Signage is very visible at every trail junction.

Please note that for the first 3/4 mile, you are essentially on private land (you will actually cross a driveway at one point); PLEASE be sure to remain on the main trail and respectful of the Lula Lake Land Trust's easement on this land. The stream bridges and other niceties were also provided by the landowners.

Shortly after you pass the 1-mile sign (from the the Nickajack trailhead), you will begin to notice the trail becoming a bit sandy underfoot. As you approach the Ground Zero, you will need to leave the trail briefly; the cache is near a large stump clearly visible from the trail, about 40' from the trail.

(Container is a standard ammo can, plainly identified with both the Geocaching logo and the River Rocks logo.)
