Geocache Description:

First to Fright is a family friendly geocaching event that celebrates Halloween and the fall season.

In 1816 a young woman (age 18) and her lover, a well known poet, visited Lord Byron and others at a vacation home in Switzerland. Due to a volcanic winter caused by an earlier eruption their plans for outdoor activites were cancelled and they were bound by the indoors. Not to be deterred, the group of writers and poets decided to entertain themselves by telling stories, reciting poems, etc. The group then decided to wager a contest in which they would all pen their own horrific tale, exchange their works, and declare a winner of whose tale was the most chilling. The young woman asked if she could also be in the contest although not a poet or author. In good spirit, she was allowed to participate with the greatest of that ages poets and authors. That woman was Mary Shelly and her story was Frankenstein. With this history in mind, local geocachers plan to hide creative caches of their own in honor of the Halloween spirit for all to enjoy along the Scottdale/ Mt. Pleasant Coal and Coake Trail. Permission for the caches was granted and now the friendly competition of creatiity has begun!

In that spirit, brianhope! and Gennacide! are holding a Fall themed event called First to Fright.  Join us for an afternoon of friends, fun, food, and finds!  Lunch will be a potluck...we are providing chipped ham barbeque and beverages (water, pop, and apple cider).  Please bring a fall food item and/or desert to share (exaples like: pumpkin pies or rolls, chili, creature cookies or ghastly treats. As well as hot meal items that will be needed).  There is electricity at the pavilion.  Let us know in your log what you will be bringing.

Date: Saturday, October 27, 2012
Time; 2:00pm-Dusk
Where: Loucks Park Pavilion in Scottdale

We are hoping for around 20 new caches to be published at 4pm on the Coal & Coke trail by us and other cachers.  It will be a race to get the FTF ("First to Fright")!  Here is a link to the trail map http://www.co.westmoreland.pa.us/parks/lib/parks/forms/c_&_c_brochure_2007.pdf

There's a playground nearby for children and we will have some sort of child friendly activity for them at the pavilion.  We will also have some activities for the adults to enjoy too (other than new caches)!  If you can donate any activities or prizes let us know in your log.

Also, the park is not pet friendly (unfortunately) so the best friend won't be able to join you at this event.  Sorry for any inconvenice this might cause, but we still hope to see all of you animal lovers there!
