A cache placed at the entrance of the new Headquarters of the National Speleological Society on Pulaski Pike at Winchester Rd. The cache is outside the fence and does not require going though the gate and onto the property.
The National Speleological Society, founded in 1941, is a membership organization with about 10,000 members. It’s purpose is to study, explore, and conserve cave and karst resources; protect access to caves; encourage responsible management of caves and their unique environments; and promote responsible caving. Since 1972 the National Speleological Society’s Headquarters has been in Huntsville, Alabama. In 2011 the Society purchased the former Cahaba Shrine property for a new, expanded Headquarters building. Eventually the building will house the Society’s Library and Museum. In addition it will hold the Society’s administrative offices and bookstore.

The western (uphill) 64 acres of the property is being turned into a nature preserve, the Drake Mountain Preserve. It will remain wooded and kept in a natural state. It does contain a few caves.
The Society is continuing the Shriner policy of making the building and grounds available for meetings, weddings, picnics, and other community events. For more information visit the website or send email to facilities@caves.org.
The cache is a small bison located outside the fence at the entrance to the property. There is no need to go past the gate or inside the fence to access the cache. Please do not bother the resident caretaker who lives just inside the gate. This cache has been placed with the knowledge and consent of the Society.
