Geocache Description:

A simple two-parter in a heavily Muggle infested area that has an unusual bonus benefit.

ALB3 is a Dept of Transport GPS Validation Marker; a yellow 'cat's eye' firmly glued to the road in the Albany Waterfront Marina Rigging Area. Its position has been accurately measured to a fine degree and is put there for boat owners to check their onboard GPS systems before putting the boat in the water and sailing off. But there's no reason that anyone with a handheld GPSr couldn't wander in and, if there aren't any boats using it, do a quick check.

(Twelve years on and the marker is a bit shabby and the white lettering on the curb has faded. But it is still there and in place!)

Once you have found the marker, and checked your GPSr (Standing on the marker, your 'Distance to Waypoint' should ideally read 0 Metres* after a few moments to settle), take a short walk. Specifically 39 metres on compass bearing 216° magnetic. (Well, this is a marina after all!) You will be looking for a small (bring your own pen) custom-made magnetic attachment desperately trying to look like it belongs there... It's gunna be hard to grab it unnoticed, but you will at least have had the satisfaction of checking your beloved GPS for accuracy! And that, after all, was my purpose in setting this cache.

There is another marker nearby on the Old Town Jetty. (35° 01.942S 117° 53.214E) That one is designed for boats in the water to moor beneath it. There is easy access for pedestrians, but it's within the dreaded 160 Metres from another cache. So I've made it a Challenge: ALB4 GPS Accuracy Check.
