This cache is an ammo container and to successfully find requires a bit of ‘mountain goating’. The climb to the GZ is short, but can be rather difficult in some places; hence the 4 star difficult rating for terrain.
Please exercise caution when navigating over this terrain. But when you do finally arrive at the GZ, you will be rewarded with great elevated views across the township of Chillagoe.
The GZ is located on an outcrop, which is part of a limestone belt that is 5 kilometres wide and 45 kilometres long. The township of Chillagoe lies within this belt.
400 million years ago, calcareous mud and coral reefs where deposited on the bed of a shallow sea to form limestone. The limestone and other inter-bedded sediments where folded and tilted to an almost vertical position due to major earth movements.
Over millions of years, the limestone above the ground has been eroded by water to form a distinct landscape called karst. Some of these limestone bluffs and towers project up to 40 metres above the surrounding plains to dominate the landscape.
The cache contains a log book, pencil and some samll swaps.
A FTF mini geocoin has been placed in the cache for the first lucky Geocacher to find and keep!
