Rossbeigh-Beach EarthCache

This cache has been archived.

Juergen1313: After much thought, I have now archived all of my caches. Unfortunately, the caches were repeatedly destroyed and had to be repaired with a lot of love and work. I have no desire to see and endure this destruction again and again. So the caches go into the archive and that's it.

Geocache Description:

Rossbeigh Beach is a great beach. You can walk, surfing, swimming and sunbathing, and more.

The Rossbeigh Beach has a distinct charme. On the other side of the Kerry peninsula the Dingle Peninsula can be seen. We've been coming here for more than 30 years now and have been hiking in any weather. The dunes have changed a lot over the years, the rising sea and the wind are the cause the dunes have become very unstable.

A special attraction of Rossbeigh Beach is a sunken ship which run ashore on January 28th 1903. The sailing ship "The Sunbeam" was caught in a violent storm and washed ashore to Rossbeigh Beach. All crew members survived and were rescued on the beach. The ship has been completely made of wood. For the shipbuilding the shipwrights used wooden nails, iron nails and also nails made of bronze.

Today only the bilge of the ship is visible. Depending on the movements of the sand a few planks are visible, if you are lucky you may even see some nails. For this cache you need 1 to 1 1/2 hours because you have to make your way to the sunken ship. To shorten the way you can take the car from the beach entry up to the first dunes.

On the way to the ship you will go to the dunes. You'll see the Erosion and will see how to cancel the dunes partly huge sand masses and topple into the depths. Most particularly, it can be seen at the end of Rossbeig beach. Note the necessary distance to the dunes so that nothing happens. Read the corresponding notes at the beginning of the cache and from the dunes.

Now walk along the sea to the north a few hundred yards away. Then you will find the ship easily.

Unfortunately, the information panel has disappeared after a severe storm and has not been built any more. For this reason, you should inform yourself about the Internet to answer the following questions:

1. The most common type of erosion is?
2. How many millions of tons of sand have disappeared in recent 5 years?
3. Is that related to question no. 1?
4. three different grass species grow based mainly on the dunes and thus stabilize them.
5. Take a picture of you in front of the ship / This is not a requirement to be able to log.

After the 5 strong gusts of rossbeigh beach is devastated. The information sign has been damaged, it is only the frame available. The boat went down in early 1900 and has been lying on the beach rossbeigh-since that time. The violent storm over Christmas has excavated the ship and 400 meters further flushed back to the beach.

Please read the notes on the ship. Do not go too close to the dunes because the sand
can break down.

Send your answers to my e-mail address. You can immediately log - should be something wrong so I'll speak up.

I would be delighted if you could hike around the entire Rossbeigh beach - it takes about 1- 1 1/2 hours.
