If you want to experience driving through a wilderness, this is where you start. Forest Service Road 870 literally worms its way through about 5-1/2 miles of the Rogue-Umpqua Divide Wilderness. 200' each side of the road is the wilderness boundary. The road is rough and rocky in places; a high clearance vehicle is highly recommended. There are very few pull outs, and even less places to turn around. Several trailheads lead off this road so if you like to hike, come prepared.
The cache marking the entrance to this road is a regular size peanut butter container with log and trade items. It is placed to minimize its time under the snow pack. Our coords were very jumpy for some reason, so if you get better coords please post them. The hint will help. Elevation 5,122'.
