Volo Bog #16 - Diversion Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

djwhouse: This area has been stripped a bit. I'll perhaps look at a new hide in the future, to better reflect the new location. Thanks to all the Volo series followers!! I hope #16 will return in a new form later this year!

Geocache Description:

Your are looking for a camo'd lock n lock box with some kid friendly swag. IF you are walking the loop clockwise, DO NOT hop the fence and bushwhack to this cache, but save the endangered species and take the looping trail until you are on 10 feet from the cache.

A big congrats to littlepig for the FTF!!!

Revised Title / was #15 4 Nov 2013 The trail takes a bit of a diversion at this point, just when you thought you had a short walk back to your car! Ah, but nature needs to do what nature needs to do, so we'll give the old trail a rest. Take the new trail as it loops around the recovering area.

Volo Bog is an Illinois Nature Preserve. These caches are located on or very close to developed trails. A small diversion was put in about this cache to redirect hikers around the original trail to allow it to recover.

Volo Bog Interpretive Trail: Designed for hikers only, this half-mile interpretive loop leads visitors through each stage of bog succession. It is constructed of wooden dock sections, boardwalks and a woodchip path. Trail brochures, adapted for each season, are available at the visitor center.

Tamarack View Trail: This 2.75-mile trail is designed for hiking and cross-country skiing (with a six-inch minimum snowbase). As park visitors traverse through woods, wetlands, field and prairie, they are given the opportunity to experience and enjoy the diverse communities within the park. From higher elevations along the trail, one can look down into the Volo Bog basin and view the state threatened tamarack trees. The trail begins just south of the visitor center and moves in a counter clockwise direction. All visitors are encouraged to move in the appropriate direction, but it is especially important that skiers do so to avoid accidents. A trail brochure for Tamarack View Trail is also available
