The woods cover the steep side of the valley as the limestone rises up to Helsington and Scout Scar. An old wood with a variety of trees, flora and fauna covering the stepped slope. The National Trust are carrying out maintenance work to revive the wood, create a variety of habitats within it and encourage diversity. The caches are hidden with the kind permission of the NT.
A small parking area can be found in the SE corner of the wood, where the road enters. We suggest doing this cache first, so from the parking, go onto the road again, then follow the sign to Cinderbarrow SW across the open field and through a squeeze stile out onto the small road. Down the road to a track on the right, which runs along the W side of the farm, before dropping down to the flat valley floor. Good views of Arnside, Whitbarrow and the far hills as you come down the fields and along the track.
The hilly geology is limestone. Most of the rain water runs through the rock in cracks and bedding planes, and some emerges in small streams near the valley bottom. Along the track you will find an interesting waterfall. Dissolved minerals are being precipitated on the stream bed.
Be gentle finding and rehiding the cache.
