Near Gawler, the Bypass/NEXY interchange was co-developed to incorporate a sculpture which formed a gateway to the development.
A 450m long ‘Snake Wall,’ inspired by the indigenous Red Bellied Black Snake and the industrial era of foundries in Gawler, greets drivers as they approach the interchange from the east.
This 5m high linear sculpture was designed by Landscape Artists - Taylor Cullity Lethlean, and Artist/Sculptor - Robert Owen. There are 190 panels (each 2.4m long), standing on 380 bases & fins, which were laser cut from more than 200 tonnes of steel.
Also, on leaving the Snake Wall, a series of sculpted mounds extend 400m beyond, thus resulting in an approximately 1km long installation designed to be viewed at speed. Where NEXY travels over the Gawler Bypass, large graphic artworks which were developed with Robert Owen and DTEI, are applied to the abutment walls (under the bridges) with LED.
Please post you’re photos of the wall when you visit. The colours change, both with the light and the seasons (you can see its red belly at night).
