A brief history: The town of New Portland was given to the residents of Falmouth (now Portland, Maine) by the Massachusetts legislature to repay them for their loss when the British fleet burned Falmouth in 1775. Land in East New Portland was first settled by Revolutionary War veterans in 1783. Other families followed, and the Town of New Portland was incorporated in 1808 as a part of Massachusetts. This cache is located near the East New Portland bridge, the current bridge was built in 1924, and it replaced the old wooden covered bridge. Notice across the Carrabassett the remains of the old Chase & Hewett mill & dam. Dont forget to check out the other interesting caches in the area such as "Really Wired" (GCGCK2). good luck. Congrats to sheni with the difficult FTF!!
