Geocache Description:

Official Geocache – John H. Kerr Dam & Reservoir

The cache is a medium Sterilite container hidden near the day-use area of Island Creek Park.

There is no charge to enter and enjoy the day-use section of the park where the cache is hidden. To access the cache from Clarksville, VA: follow US-15 south towards Oxford, NC for 7 miles. Next, turn left onto Townsville Road and drive 4.4 miles to the entrance of Island Creek Park. After entering the park, turn right at the first fork in the road (at the bulletin board and vault toilet), and park in the lot near the shoreline. (Following the fork left will lead to the boat ramp which requires a $5 user fee.)

Island Creek is one of many parks located on the John H. Kerr Reservoir, also known as Buggs Island Lake. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers manages four campgrounds, twelve day-use areas, and leases land to the states of Virginia and North Carolina for eight additional parks. Camping, picnicking, swimming, and fishing are all available to the public. The Corps also manages 26 wildlife areas that provide opportunities for hunting, hiking, fishing, and bird watching. In its entirety, Kerr consists of roughly 50,000 acres of water, 55,000 acres of land, and 800 miles of shoreline.

The Visitor Assistance Center at John H. Kerr Reservoir is located adjacent to the Dam, next to North Bend Park. It is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 am until 4:30 pm. If you have questions or concerns, please contact us using the form provided on this site or call (434) 738-6143.
