Geocache Description:

A quick roadside cache just past the Split Stane heading out into the wilds of Sutherland. It survived the bush fire in Spring 2016 - blame the dragons?

The Split Stane is a large boulder, split in two pieces and lying at the side of the road. Although the modern border between Caithness and Sutherland is a short distance to the east, this stone marks the traditional border. For people from Caithness to go west into Sutherland is to go ‘Beyond the Split Stane’. In mediaeval time, wild empty lands would be annotated on maps with the likes of ‘Here be Dragons’. When we leave Caithness and drive past the Split Stane, heading to the wilds of Sutherland, we joke that we are entering ‘Dragon Country’. And when we get safely back into Caithness past the Split Stane we breathe a sigh of relief that we are ‘Safe from Dragons’. The cache is hidden about 460 beyond the Split Stane, deep in ‘Dragon Country’. Stealth is required, just in case you get spotted by dragons! Approach from Thurso, on the A836, about 1km from the Caithness and Sutherland border. Parking on the right about 600 metres beyond the feature known as the ‘Split Stane’, by the ‘Big House’ junction.
