Geocache Description:

This is a quick Drive In, Drive Out cache located with-in the township of Mount Surprise. This cache is a log only cache. Please bring a pen or pencil and once finished, return the cache to the exact spot found to prevent it from becoming muggled.

The town was formed in 1908 with the arrival of the railway and has primarily survived due to the cattle industry. It has always been an important transportation hub for the surrounding cattle stations, iwhich nitially used the railway to transport their beef up until 1995. These days, cattle are transported via a different type of train .... a road train!

Mount Surprise is a small town filled with rich historical significance. An example being the old Telegraph Station building which still exists with-in the town. It was in this very building back in 1872, where William Hann reported the first gold to have been found on the Palmer River. This led to Queensland’s largest gold rush, with over 1 million ounces of gold being legally recorded to have been found.

While visiting Mount Surprise, take the time to walk around and read the various historical information plagues located through-out.
