Geocache Description:

The history of this church goes back in time to the first settlers of this area. In 1838, Mr John Cavanagh deeded the land (approx one acre) that the church sits on to the Bishop of Quebec with the interesting stipulation that he have pew No. 1 on the south side of the church.  It was the right thing to do and to this day, that pew is still used by the Cavanagh family.

The church was built with stone from Bradley's Creek about 2 miles away. The church was completed in November of 1838.  Little did they know at the time that those stone walls would still be standing in 2012.

In the spring of 1839, a meeting was held to discuss improvements to the burial ground next to the church.  A surveyor was hired and laid out the burial plots in a more orderly manner. (To find the cache, it's not necessary to venture very far onto the burial ground, but please feel free to wander around and read the headstones.)

The cairn in front of the church is dedicated to the many pioneers of the area and of those who founded the church.

Be sure to take a look at the plaque near the front of the church commemorating its designation as a "Heritage Site" by the Ontario Archeological and Historic Sites Board.
