Geocache Description:

This is a easy park and grab cache. There is no container at the final location as it is a virtual cache. Take care with children as it is close to a major road. DO NOT ACCESS THIS FROM THE PARKWAY!

Lyons is a suburb in the Canberra, Australia district of Woden. The postcode is 2606.

The suburb was named after Joseph Lyons, Labor Premier of Tasmania from 1923 to 1928 and a Minister in the James Scullin government from 1929 until his resignation from the Labor Party in March 1931. He subsequently led the United Australia Party and was the tenth Prime Minister of Australia from January 1932 until his death in 1939.

The suburb is bounded by Melrose Drive, Tuggeranong Parkway and Hindmarsh Drive. Oakey Hill Nature Reserve, part of Canberra Nature Park, is located within the suburb. The reserve has a number of walking trails and views across Woden and Weston Creek and into Civic. The suburb has a local shopping centre and neighbourhood oval. A former petrol station has since been demolished. Lyons Early Learning School caters for children from birth to grade two through an on-site childcare provider ammalgamated with the school.

Streets in Lyons are named after locations in Tasmania. (extract from wikipedia)

The geology of the Australian Capital Territory

During the Ordovician period, the Australian Capital Territory, as well as most of Eastern Australia, was part of the ocean floor. The rocks in the Australian Capital Territory were formed around 480-425 million years ago. The earlier rocks were formed in the Ordovician era while the later rocks were formed in the Silurian Era. Most of these younger, Silurian period rocks were formed through pyroclastic deposits from explosive volcanic eruptions, although the Yarralumla Formation is comprised of sedimentary mudstone/siltstone that was formed around 425 million years ago. The ACT area contains the Pittman Formation which consist largely of Quartz-rich Sandstone, Siltstone and Shale like that demonstrated at GCZDD2. The Pittman Formation also contains the Adaminaby beds and the Acton Shale. Since the ACT was once part of the sea bed, many fossils have been deposited and this is predominant at GCHKCK where there is many brachiopod, bryozoans and trilobite fossils.

History of the Tuggeranong Parkway

Construction of the Tuggeranong Parkway began in 1972 with the Hindmarsh Drive interchange constructed in 1978. The Tuggeranong Parkway is 11km long and connects Tuggeranong with Belconnen and Woden. The Tuggeranong Parkway has connecting roads at Drakeford Drive, Sulwood Drive, Hindmarsh Drive (at Lyons), Cotter Road (at Curtin), Lady Denman Drive (at Yarralumla), William Hovel Drive, Parkes Way and the Glenloch Drive Extension. The road was also involved in the 2003 Canberra bushfires with the fires coming up to the side of the road and wiping away the Pine Plantation on the Western side. Road Cuttings are present along the Tuggeranong Parkway with a double road cutting at GZ if there is need to upgrade to 8 lanes. The original plans for the Tuggeranong Parkway had it continuing down Kambah Pool road, across the Murrumbidgee River at Red Rocks Gorge to connect the suburbs on the west side of the river but due to the environmental sensitivity, these plans were scraped.

The Road Cuttings

The Deakin Volcanics can be seen at these road cuttings between Hindmarsh Drive and Cotter Road. The visible base shows a weathered repeating sequence of interbedded rhyodacitic ignimbrite, sandstone, siltstone and red and yellow shale. The bottom of the Deakin Volcanics is visible at nearby Heysen Street, with at least 400m thickness of beds exposed at the parkway cuttings. The Deakin Volcanics is mostly comprised of Silicon Dioxide, Aluminium Oxide, Potassium Oxide, Dihydrogen Monoxide or water and Calcium Oxide. The rock types in the Deakin Volcanics include rhyodacitic ignimbrite, lava (Mugga Mugga Porphyry Member), tuff, tuffaceous shale and minor quartz sandstones and volcanic breccia from the early Ludlovian period. The Mugga Mugga Porphyry is blue or mauve grey while the volcanic breccia is a reddish brown colour.
