Burden of Proof: 20 Logical Fallacies Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

ZombieDragonfly: Alas, with the recent Nuns fire having burned 2/3 of Anadel State Park (including the majority of the caches and stages in the Logical Fallacy series), and with the Logical Fallacy series needing all 21 caches active to be functional, and given we’ve had a good run of nearly five years, it’s time to archive the series and open up the back side of the park for new caches when that part of the park reopens.

Our thanks to all who have enjoyed this series of caches.

Geocache Description:

Burden of Proof is when the burden of proof of a claim is shifted to the wrong side. In general, and at least initially, the burden of proof rests on the side making a claim in the affirmative. Once the claim has been established, then the burden of proof would shift to the other side.

For example, for millennia humans believed Earth was at the center of the Solar System, the Sun and other planets revolving around Earth. In years gone by, casual observations "verified" that this was true. At that time, the burden of proof rested on others to prove Earth was not the center of the Solar System.

By the 16th century, due to the work of, amongst others, Copernicus, Kepler and Galileo, including not only observational but also mathematical models consistent with observations, it had been clearly established that the Sun is at the center of the Solar system.

So now the burden of proof has shifted to those few holdouts (and yes there are a few cranks out there who still believe this) that Earth is at the center of the Solar System. Any attempt by these holdouts to claim the burden of proof rests on modern science to prove the Sun is at the center of the Solar System would represent a Burden of Proof fallacy.

Dragonfly: Well I seem to remember reading somewhere we can place caches anywhere we want. So what's all this about a 1/10th of a mile minimum separation?

Zombie: Sigh. Dragonfly, that minimum separation has been established for over 10 years now. I think *you* need to show me otherwise.

This series of caches is dedicated to each of 20 different logical fallacies, one for each fallacy. The 20 fallacies in this series do not represent all the possible fallacies but should provide a good start for any student of logic.

In addition to the 20 Logical Fallacy Series caches, there is a series final: "20 Logical Fallacies: Series Final" (GC3W7C7). The cache description in the series final contains a list of the 20 caches in the series, their names and GC numbers for easy reference.

If possible, you want to read the description of the final before logging any of the 20 caches in the series as that description contains instructions on how to arrive at the final's coordinates!

Team ZombieDragonfly hopes you enjoy the tour of some of the less frequently visited parts of Annadel State Park (and the one cache which takes you outside the park) and, who knows, you just may learn a thing or two about logic!

This camo'd decon container is located way back there in Annadel Park, off Schultz Trail. It's a reasonably long hike from most trailheads and so many would prefer to do the mountain bike thing. Your choice.
