Geocache Description:

An easy cache to get to but might be a bit hard to find, the log container can be opened without twisting. Some parking is nearby off the street in both directions from GZ. A torch will help to find the cache, night or day. No room for swaps, contains cache note, log book and pencil. Good luck.

A STATEMENT from the Premier's Department on 2009 blackout in Victoria:  Taken from the herald sun from Jan 2009.

What happened

On Friday 30 January 2009 around 3.30pm, a major 500 kilovolt transmission line from South Morang to Keilor was taken out after an explosion at the South Morang Terminal Station.

The two remaining 500 kilovolt lines for western metropolitan Melbourne and western Victoria continued to operate and supply was not interrupted at this time.

A short time after 6pm, a second major 500 kilovolt transmission line, from South Morang to Sydenham, was taken out as a result of damage caused by the original explosion.

This meant power was not transmitted to as many as 500,000 homes and businesses in Melbournes west, some parts of the CBD and western Victoria.
By 9pm, 230,000 homes and businesses were still without power.By 10pm, 105,000 homes and businesses were still without power.

What will happen

Throughout these two events, power generation continued at capacity. It was the transmission that was affected.

SP Ausnet advises that it believes the South Morang to Sydenham line will be repaired and back in service by midnight.

This means the transmission capacity will be restored for households in Melbournes west, some parts of the CBD and western Victoria.

However, until the South Morang to Keilor line is restored, there will is no redundancy or back-up should there be a similar and very significant transmission fault.

SP Ausnet also advises that work will continue on the South Morang to Keilor line, with the aim of restoring the line by the end of the weekend.

Further outages

Local outages are very likely to continue from localised incidents and crews are responding to these as quickly as possible.

Transmission will be restored with repairs to the South Morang to Sydenham line, but there will be no back-up until the South Morang to Keilor line is repaired.

The main threats to power supply are bushfires and major equipment failure, as occurred with the two major transmission lines.
