Geocache Description:

♦♦♦ Next to the Flying Machine base ♦♦♦

This one posed somewhat more of a problem because the trig point that the cache theme is 'based on' is inside the perimeter fence of the Lyneham airbase.

Extract from Wikipedia; "The station was opened on 18 May 1940 as No. 33 Maintenance Unit with no ceremony and few personnel. On the first day of operations, the personnel strength was recorded as four officers, one other rank and 15 civilians. Nine vehicles were also recorded, including two tractors, an ambulance and a Crossley fire engine. The station did not have any aircraft however, until the end of the month when a de Havilland Tiger Moth and a Fairey Albacore arrived.

and now, sadly, 70 odd years later .....

With the transfer of military units and personnel to Brize Norton complete, around 1,000 members of civilian staff will remain on site until RAF Lyneham closes entirely, due on 31 December 2012."

It looks quite attractive though from afar, with a small tree growing alongside!

The footpath we chose starts by the abbey remains at the southern tip of Bradenstoke and at the end of a 'No Through' road. There's an area to park to your left but make sure you leave enough space to avoid being blocked in!

With the road behind you, the footpath goes off to the right and for part of the route stays close to the perimeter fence. A section through Avon Grove Wood was/is particularly muddy!

We decided on this theme because, from their very nature, there would have been excellent views in at least two different directions some 75 years ago when the trig-points close-by were first placed.

The view this time is just before reaching the cache site and looks out toward Morgan's Hill.

YOU'LL NEED SOME LONG TROUSERS AND WALKING BOOTS OR WELLIES FOR THIS ONE!

Very Well Done to 'Fieldpig' - First To Find Delta #4.
I'm sure it was still warm when you picked it up!
Can't believe you don't like JP-8!
:-)
