Geocache Description:

Hancock or as it was formerly known, “Tonoloway Settlement” was an outpost on the frontier. It was subject to the ravages of Indian raids.
At the height of these raids, Maryland Provincial Governor Horatio Sharpe ordered a series of forts to be built along the Potomac.
In 1755, Lt. Thomas Stoddert, with a crew of 15-20, were sent out to build a stockade fort in the “Tonoloways” (now Hancock).
It was completed by July of 1755.
In 1756, the stone fortress of “Fort Frederick” was completed.
Located twelve miles to the east, Fort Stoddard or later known as “Fort Tonoloway” was abandoned.
Letters preserved from the era depict a gruesome picture of the massacres that occurred in the areas surrounding these forts.

Fort Tonoloway State Park was a state park in the state of Maryland. The park was located near present day Hancock High School, at some point closed to allow for extension of the school athletic fields.

The Entrance to the Tonoloway State Park was located along Locher Road, just West of Hancock. The cache you seek is hidden near what used to be the Entrance to the park.

Parking is located along the shoulder of this country road, If caching with kids, just be aware of their whereabouts at all times. Stealth should be no issue but Muggles can come driving by from either direction.

Congratulations to Friends of the MGS for the FTF !!!!!
